Box Score Leading only 6-0 after one half of play, the Centre College football team scored 22 points in the third quarter and seven more in the fourth, while the defense posted its fourth shutout in the last five years to defeat Maryville College 35-0 Saturday, Sept. 11 in Maryville, Tenn.
The Colonels, which blanked Sewanee-University of the South in both 2006 and 2009 and Rhodes College in 2008, improve to 1-1 in the early going, while Maryville, which has yet to score a touchdown in 2010, falls to 0-2.
Sophomore kicker Jordan Gay (Danville, Ky.) did all the scoring for Centre in the first half connecting on a pair of field goals from 23 yards out in the first quarter and from 21 yards out in the second for a 6-0 lead.
The two teams traded scoreless possessions to open the second half, but following the Scots second scoreless possession, junior Jordan Albright (Cincinnati, Ohio) returned a punt 54 yards to the Maryville 19-yard line.
Three plays later, junior quarterback Tyler Osterman (Monroe, Ohio) crossed the goal line from four yards out and then also ran in the two-point conversion for a 14-0 lead.
On Maryville's next possession, the Scots moved the ball to their own 30-yard line and faced a fourth and five. A pass attempt fell incomplete and the Colonels took over. Centre needed only five plays to punch it in the end zone again as sophomore running back Monte Scotton (Cleveland, Tenn.) capped the drive off with his first collegiate touchdown, a two-yard run, to put Centre ahead 21-0.
Things went from bad to worse for the Scots as quarterback Dustin Williams was intercepted on Maryville's next drive by senior cornerback Jimmie Warren (Georgetown, Ky.), who returned it 31 yards for a touchdown and a 28-0 Centre lead.
The Colonels added another score in the fourth quarter as senior Drew Sanderson (Mayfield, Ky.) scored his second career touchdown on a 21-yard run for the final 35-0 tally.
Centre out-gained the Scots 370-241 and led 32:44-25:07 in time of possession. Osterman finished the day 16 of 27 for 185 yards with an interception. Scotton carried the ball 18 times for 85 yards and a touchdown. Albright caught four passes for 33 yards, while sophomore receiver Jason Osterman (Monroe, Ohio) caught three balls for 52 yards.
Senior linebackers Brian Hodge (Hamilton, Ohio) and Will Geisen (Edgewood, Ky.) paced the defense. Hodge had 11 tackles, while Geisen tallied 10 in the win. The Colonels' defense also recorded 7.0 tackles for loss and forced three turnovers (two fumbles and one interception.)
Centre will return home Saturday, Sept. 18 to host DePauw University in the first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game for both teams. Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky.
