Box Score Playing in their second game of the Glenn Hyundai/Transylvania Showcase the Centre women's soccer team knocked off Berry College by a score of 4-0 on Sunday, September 12 in Lexington, Ky.
Defense dominated the first half of the Berry versus Centre game as neither team was able to get many shots off. The Colonels had the advantage with shots as they had two compared to the Vikings one shot, but junior Kelli Lenz (Louisville, Ky.) had to make one save, while Berry's Rebekah Bullock didn't have any saves. The Colonels also had the 5-0 advantage in corner kicks during the first half.
The Colonels offense came out rejuvenated in the second half as it took them less than a minute to score a goal. Senior Christina Giles (Versailles, Ky.) made it a 1-0 game when she found the back of the net.
Less than two minutes later sophomore Amy Hebbeler (Ft. Wright, Ky.) made it a 2-0 game when she was able to get the ball past Bullock from 20 yards out.
Centre continued to put pressure on the Vikings and in the 59th minute senior Brittany Garr (Louisville, Ky.) scored in the lower right corner of the goal on a through pass from senior Sarah Hall (Danville, Ky.).
Although the Colonels had built a significant lead they were not done on the offensive end of the field, as Garr scored her second goal of the match just over a minute later to make it a 4-0 game. Garr was able to find the left side of the net on the goal as Giles recorded the assist.
The Colonels offense and defense had a terrific second half as Berry was unable to take away the Colonels momentum.
Centre had eight shots in the game and 11 corner kicks, while the Vikings had five shots and three corners. Lenz recorded the win for the Colonels as she had three saves in the match.
Up next for the Colonels is in state rival Transylvania on Wednesday, September 15 in Lexington, Ky. The game is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
