Box Score A first half goal was all that was needed as the Centre College men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Chapman University in its season-opener Friday, Sept. 3 in Lexington, Ky.
The loss drops the Colonels to 0-1, while Chapman, playing its second match of the season, evens its overall record at 1-1. The match was played as part of the Transylvania University Classic hosted by Transylvania.
The Panthers' Nick Echeverry scored the match's only goal off a rebound of a corner kick at the 17:16 mark in the first half and the Chapman defense held Centre scoreless the remainder of the match.
The Colonels out-shot the Panthers 13-5, while Chapman tallied a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Chris Jackson (Oxford, Ohio) suffered the loss for Centre.
"All in all, a well played game for us, especially for our first game of the year," Centre head coach Jeb Burch said.
"It's tough when their lone shot on frame wins the game, especially off a set piece error. I am confident though we will bounce back tomorrow," Burch added.
The Colonels will look for their first win of the season Saturday, Sept. 4 when they play Asbury College at 2 p.m. on day two of the classic in Lexington, Ky.
