Colonels notch first win with 2-0 defeat of Asbury

Box Score

One day after dropping a hard-fought season-opening game to Chapman University, the Centre College men's soccer team bounced back with a 2-0 win over Asbury University Saturday, Sept. 4 in Lexington, Ky.

With the win, the Colonels even their record to 1-1 overall, while Asbury falls to 0-2 on the season. The match was played as part of the Glenn Hyundai Classic, hosted by Transylvania University.

Centre wasted little time jumping on the scoreboard as sophomore Josh Settle (Bowling Green, Ky.) scored the first goal of the season for the Colonels only 3:40 into the match. Junior Austin Hall (Indianapolis, Ind.) recorded the assist.

Less than two minutes later, the roles were reversed as Hall scored from 15 yards out off an assist from Settle to give Centre a 2-0 lead.

The defense took over from there limiting Asbury to only four shots. The Colonels tallied 13 shots and held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Junior Chris Jackson (Oxford, Ohio) earned the shutout win in goal for Centre. Jackson stopped the only shot he faced in the win.

The Colonels will return home to host the 21st Annual Bob Allen Nissan Classic, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10-11. Centre will play Oberlin College at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Danville, Ky. before taking on Hiram College at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
