One day after dropping a pair of matches on day one of the Eureka Tournament, the Centre College volleyball team swept its two matches on day two defeating Illinois College and Blackburn College Sunday, Sept. 5 in Eureka, Ill.
The Colonels, now 2-3 on the season, defeated Illinois in five games to open the day. Centre won the first two games 25-17 and 25-7, but dropped games three and four 25-21 and 25-20, before winning game five 15-12.
Junior Stephanie Woeste (Louisville, Ky.), paced the Colonels attack with 14 kills and five blocks. Senior Rebecca Pugh (Colfax, Calif.) tallied 13 kills and 17 digs.
Freshman Catherine Janszen (Cincinnati, Ohio) added 13 kills. Junior Hannah Greer (Owensboro, Ky.) notched 30 assists and sophomore Jenna Foushee (Louisville, Ky.) added 20 digs.
In the second match of the day Centre needed only three games to dispense of Blackburn winning 25-13, 25-15 and 25-7.
Woeste had 10 kills. Janszen added seven kills. Freshman Kary Stivers (Louisville, Ky.) recorded 15 assists and six blocks, while Foushee added seven digs in the win. Senior Ashton Hupman (Lexington, Ky.) also notched six blocks on the day, posting three in each match.
Next up for the Colonels is the Hanover College Tournament Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10-11 in Hanover, Ind. Centre will play Hanover at 3:30 p.m. Friday and then Thomas More later that day at 5:30 p.m.
