Box Score The Centre field hockey team got out to an early lead and cruised to a 6-1 victory over Transylvania on its senior day Sunday at Farris Staduim in Danville, Ky.
Centre held a ceremony prior to the game for its four seniors, Katy Meyer (Louisville, Ky.), Leah Oberst (Louisville, Ky.), Jennifer Bohnert (Louisville, Ky.) and Patty Cowley (Louisville, Ky.) and all played a significant role in the victory. Meyer scored the first goal of the match, and Cowley made four saves in goal while Bohnert and Oberst anchored a defense the allowed just five shots on cage.
After Meyer got Centre on the board, the Colonels kept the momentum with three more first half goals. Courtney Kuiper (Louisville, Ky.) scored on an assist from Sarah Jessee (Louisville, Ky.) to make the score 2-0, followed by Sydney White scoring on a hard shot from the left side. A second Kuiper goal made the score 4-0 going to the half.
The Colonels picked up where they left off in the second half as Alexis Hebert (Chapel Hill, N.C.) scored just two minutes in to make the score 5-0. With 24:38 to play, Barbara Parks (Chapel Hill, N.C.) capped Centre's scoring with her seventh goal of the year, tying her for the team lead with Kuiper and Jessee.
Transylvania's Molly Dean scored on an assist from Kerri Kolarik in the closing minutes to avoid the shutout.
Overall, Centre outshot Transylvania 24-7 and held a 13-9 edge in penalty corners. Transylvania goalkeeper Sara Aschbacher made 17 saves.
With the win, Centre improves to 10-5 on the season, dropping Transylvania to 3-12. The Colonels hold a 3-1 record in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play where they will travel to Rhodes (7-6, 3-1 SCAC) for a matchup of first place teams on Friday.
