Box Score The Centre College field hockey team had its five-match winning streak snapped in a 2-1 loss to Sewanee-University of the South Friday, Oct. 7 in Sewanee, Tenn.
The loss drops the Colonels to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), while Sewanee improves to 3-5 overall and 1-3 in league play.
The Tigers Elise Landau opened the scoring at the 15:50 mark in the first half off an assist from Mary Kate McAlister for a 1-0 lead.
Sewanee added to the lead in the second half when Karen Dawson hit the back of the cage off an assist from Sydney Philpott to extend the lead to 2-0.
Centre's Leah Oberst (Louisville, Ky.) cut the lead in half with her first goal of the season at the 54:53 mark in the second half, but it would not be enough. Sophomore Jessica McLean (St. Louis, Mo.) had the assist, her first of the year.
The Colonels out-shot Sewanee 18-14 and held a 16-7 advantage in penalty corners. Senior Patty Cowley (Louisville, Ky.) took the loss in goal. Cowley made three saves in the defeat.
Centre will next play Roanoke College Saturday, Oct. 8. The match is set to start at 1 p.m. in Sewanee, Tenn.
