Colonels go 3-1 on the first day of the March Mayhem Tournament

Playing in their annual March Mayhem Tournament the Centre softball team went 3-1 on Saturday, March 12 at home in Danville, Ky. losing 11-4 to Manchester, while beating Rose-Hulman twice 5-4 and 13-5 and Oberlin 8-3. The Colonels improved to 5-1 on the season with the wins.

In Centre's first game of the tournament the Colonels took an early 4-0 lead in the first inning, but Manchester would use a 10 run fifth inning to eventually go on to win 11-4.

Freshman Ashley Christian (Kingsport, Tenn.), junior Regina Sena (Moss Beach, Calif.), sophomore Mary Saylor (Brodhead, Ky.), and senior Taylor Childress (Nashville, Tenn.) each scored a run in the game.

Sophomore Emily Meador (Scottsville, Ky.) pitched all seven innings for the Colonels giving up six hits, 11 runs, walking two, striking out six in 36 batters faced.

The Colonels recovered from their loss in the first game by beating Rose-Hulman in the second game 5-4. Centre again had a strong first inning scoring two runs to take the early lead.

Rose-Hulman tied the game up in the sixth inning, but Centre responded when they came to bat in the inning to score two more runs, making it a 4-2 game.

The Fighting Engineers scored two more runs in the seventh to tie the game for the second time, but Centre again answered by scoring a run to take the 5-4 win.

Christian, Sena, Childress, Saylor, and sophomore Chelsea Benham (Taswell, Ind.) each scored a run in the game. Childress and Meador each had two RBI's in the win.

Sophomore Emily Landherr (Louisville, Ky.) was on the mound for Centre during the seven innings of play. She gave up seven hits and four runs, while walking eight and striking out five in 36 batters faced.

Centre continued to improve on the day, as they went on to beat Oberlin College in the third game of the day. They built up a 8-0 lead in six innings of play, before Oberlin was able to get three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Childress led Centre in scoring with three runs in three at bats, while freshman Katie Martello (Nicholasville, Ky.) recorded two. Benham had three RBI's in the game.

Saylor was the winning pitcher in the game following seven innings of pitching where she gave up eight hits and three runs, but did not allow a player from Oberlin to walk. she struck out six of thee 33 batters faced.

The Colonels ended the night by facing Rose-Hulman for the second time. Centre opened the game by scoring eight runs in the first inning, but the Fighting Engineers cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning by scoring four runs.

Centre would score again in the third inning with two runs and three runs in the fourth. Rose-Hulman picked up one more run in the fourth. The game would end following the fifth inning, as the Colonels led by more than 10 runs.

Christian, Saylor, Meador, and Landherr each had two hits in the win, while Sena had six RBI's. Meador also had four RBI's in the game.

Meador pitched the five inning game, allowing five hits and five runs, but she only walked four batters, while striking out four in six batters faced.

The Colonels will continue play in the March Mayhem Tournament on Sunday, March 13 when they face Manchester at 12:00 p.m. in the first game at Millennium Park in Danville, Ky.
