Box Score 2 The Centre College baseball team lost both ends of a double header losing 4-1 in game one and losing game two by the same 4-1 score to No. 9 Birmingham Southern College Saturday, March 19 at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky.
The pair of losses drops the Colonels to 6-11 overall and 0-2 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), while Birmingham Southern improves to 16-3 overall and 2-0 in league play.
Game one saw the Panthers score three runs in the first two innings, while Centre plated one run in the first on a run-scoring single by junior catcher Cameron Fishman (Northridge, Calif.) to make it a 3-1 game after two innings.
The score remained that way until Birmingham Southern added another run in the seventh and finished in a 4-1 win for the Panthers.
Junior pitcher Joe Nash (1-4) took the loss in a complete-game effort. The junior allowed four runs - all earned - on eight hits with no walks and five strikeouts, while the Centre offense could muster only five hits in the game.
Birmingham Southern struck first in the second game as well scoring a run in the first and another in the third for a 2-0 advantage.
Freshman third baseman Charlie Holland (Knoxville, Tenn.) put the Colonels on the board with a run-scoring double to cut the lead to 2-1, only to see the Panthers come back and score two in the seventh en-route to another 4-1 victory.
Junior pitcher Ben Lause (Mason, Ohio) was the losing pitcher in game two. Lause went 6.1 innings and allowed four runs - three earned - on 10 hits with two walks and a five strikeouts.
Fishman, sophomore outfielder Danny Freudiger (Mason, Ohio), senior first baseman Steven Proctor (Springfield, Ga.), and senior infielder Cory Crowdis (Louisville, Ky.) accounted for eight of the Colonels' 10 hits on the game as each recorded a pair of hits in the defeat.
Centre will look to win game three of the series Sunday, March 20. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky.
