Box Score The Centre women's lacrosse team came from behind in the second half to beat Berry 11-9 on Saturday, March 26 at home in Danville, Ky. Centre is 9-3 on the season following the win and they are 1-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Berry scored the first two goals of the game to take the early 2-0 lead over the Colonels.
Freshman Sarah Mastey (Chattanooga, Tenn.) put Centre on the board at the 14:02 mark, cutting the Vikings lead in half.
The Vikings score three more goals in the first half of action and they went into halftime ahead 5-1. Kaylee Lane picked up the final goal of the first half with 50 seconds on the clock.
Centre had 13 shots on 10 ground-balls in the first half of play. The Colonels were successful on only one of their three clear attempts. Berry had 11 shots and 12 ground-balls, while going 2-2 on clears. Centre caused the Vikings to turn the ball over five times in the first 30 minutes of play while the Colonels turned it over only one time.
Freshman Lauren Esterle (Louisville, Ky.) had two saves in the first half, while Taylor Martin had four for Berry.
Mastey made it a 5-2 game when she found the back of the cage on a free position shot with 28:54 remaining in the game.
Berry answered 54 seconds later as Kristen Brooks put the Vikings back ahead by four.
Freshman Meg Hawthorne (Cary, N.C.) and Katy Cremer (Hudson, Ohio) pulled the Colonels within two after they each recorded a goal.
Centre tied the game up at the 11:07 mark when Hawthorne was able to get the ball past Martin to put the score at 8-8.
They Vikings took the lead back less than a minute later, as Blair Shupenko scored on an assist by Anya Dziurzynski.
Mastey scored the final three goals of the game to give Centre the 11-9 win. She secured the win for the Colonels with just two seconds to go in the game, as she picked up her sixth goal.
During the second half of play the Colonels outshot Berry 22-8 and they had the 9-5 advantage in ground-balls. Centre also forced the Vikings into four turnovers, while they only posted one.
Esterle had one save in the win, as Martin had five.
Hawthorne added three goals to Mastey's six, while Cremer and freshman Frances Fisher (Ijamsville, Md.) each recorded one. Mastey and Hawthorne both grabbed four ground balls. Hawthorne led the team in caused turnovers with four.
Jenny Miller had three goals on six shot attempts for Berry, while she also picked up four ground-balls and had one caused turnover. Katie O'Brien also had four ground-balls for the Vikings and Shupenko had one caused turnover.
Next up for Centre will be a conference game against Birmingham-Southern at home in Danville, Ky. on Friday, April 8.
