Colonels fall to Birmingham Southern on Senior Day

Taking part in their final home game of their inaugural season the Centre men's lacrosse team lost to Birmingham Southern 20-3 on Sunday, April 17 in Danville, Ky. The Colonels are 3-9 on the season and they finished 2-5 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Centre seniors Hunter Burkey (Greenville, Tenn.) and Ryan Curry (Central City, Ky.) were honored before the game for their efforts during the season.

Birmingham Southern built up a 4-0 lead in the first period of play and they would go ahead 10-0 early into the second quarter of play.

Sophomore Dougie Hillard (Lexington, Ky.) ended the Panthers run with 3:26 remaining before halftime, as he was able to find the back of the cage.

The Panthers picked up one more goal to go into halftime with the 11-1 advantage.

Centre had five shots, six ground-balls, and they went 4-14 on face-offs, while going 6-10 on clear attempts. Birmingham Southern had 26 shots, 20 ground-balls, and they were 8-8 on clear attempts.

Freshman goalkeeper Clayton Brown (Louisville, Ky.) had 10 saves in the first 30 minutes of play. Andrew Huffman had six saves for the Panthers.

During the third period the Panthers built a 17-1 lead, as they went on a 6-0 run.

Sophomore Scott Hughes (Chattanooga, Tenn.) would stop the run when he was able to get the ball past Huffman at the 2:42 mark of the third period.

Birmingham Southern picked up two more goals to start the fourth quarter.

Freshman Connor Stubbs (Decatur, Ga.) scored the final goal for the Colonels with 4:40 remaining in the game to put the score at 19-3.

Brennan Ott of Birmingham Southern found the back of the cage for the final goal of the game at the 4:05 mark to make it a 20-3 game.

The Colonels had seven shots and six ground-balls in the second half of action. Centre also went 4-10 on face-offs and 7-9 on clear attempts. The Panthers had 21 shots, seven ground-balls, and they were 9-9 on clears.

Brown finished the game with 15 saves, while Huffman had six.

Hillard recorded one assist in the game. Hughes and freshman Jay Reed (Louisville, Ky.) each had three ground-balls. Freshman John Cofer (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) and Hughes each had one caused turnover for Centre.

Matt Ivie posted six goals for Birmingham Southern and Ben Schaefer grabbed six ground-balls.

Next up for the Colonels will be a game against Oberlin College on Tuesday, May 3 at 4:30 p.m. in Oberlin, Ohio. The game against Oberlin will be Centre's final game of the season.
