The Centre men's tennis team earned their first win of the season on Saturday, April 2 over conference opponent Austin College in Atlanta, Ga. The Colonels won by a score of 6-3 to improve to 1-6 on the season and to 1-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Sophomore Andrew Howard (Frankfort, Ky.) and sophomore Richard Rumble (Lawrenceville, Ga.) earned the 8-6 win in the number two doubles match, beating Zack Bengston and James Taylor.
Junior Ben Newstadt (Louisville, Ky.) took the 6-2 and 6-3 win over Tyler Roush in the number one singles match.
Winning the number two singles match was Centre sophomore Xan Witherington (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) who knocked off Anthony Cook 6-2 and 6-3.
Howard was successful in the number three singles match, winning by a score of 6-3 and 6-2 over Taylor.
Rumble gave the Colonels a win in the number four singles match, as his match went into three sets. He lost to Bengston in the first set 6-2, before taking the second set 6-4 and the third set 6-3.
Senior Kit Brunner (Cincinnati, Ohio) held off Spencer Gander in the number six singles match, taking the 6-2 and 7-5 win.
Next up for the Colonels will be a match against conference opponent Birmingham Southern on Sunday, April 3 at 8:00 a.m. in Atlanta, Ga.
