Box Score The Centre women's lacrosse team had a challenging conference game on their Senior Day against Birmingham Southern on Friday, April 8 in Danville, Ky. and the Colonels were able to come away with a 19-18 win in overtime. The Colonels improved to 10-3 on the season and to 2-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Freshmen Sarah Mastey (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Meg Hawthorne (Cary, N.C.) scored the first two goals in the opening minute of the game to give Centre the 2-0 lead.
Chelsea Van Voorhis pulled the Panthers within one of the Colonels, as she was able to find the back of the cage.
The Colonels took the 5-1 advantage 7:53 into play following two goals by freshman Katy Cremer (Hudson, Ohio) and one by Mastey.
Logan Harris stopped the 3-0 run by the Colonels, after she was able to get the ball past freshman Lauren Esterle (Louisville, Ky.).
Centre then went on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 12-2. Hawthorne led the run by recording four of the goals.
Birmingham Southern built some momentum at the end of the half scoring the final two goals to put the score at 12-4 going into halftime.
The Colonels finished the first half of play with 18 shots, 10 ground-balls, and they went 5-5 on clears. Birmingham Southern had 10 shots and eight ground-balls, while they were 1-2 on clear attempts.
Esterle had five saves in the first 30 minutes of play. Katie Bates posted three saves for the Panthers.
Mastey scored her fourth goal of the game to start the second half of play.
Ashley Johnson answered shortly after the Mastey goal.
Freshman Frances Fisher (Ijamsville, Md.) made it a 14-5 game, before the Panthers were able to score the next two goals of the game and cut into the Colonels lead with just under 13 minutes to play in the game.
Mastey then scored for the Colonels on a free position shot to put the score at 15-7.
Birmingham Southern went on a 7-0 run from the 16:28 mark until the 23:37 mark to pull within one of the Colonels.
The Colonels built their lead back up to three following a goal on a free position shot by Hawthorne and one by senior MaryKate Mahoney (Malden, Mass.).
The Panthers responded and scored the final three goals of regulation to put the game into overtime.
Birmingham Southern also scored the first goal in overtime, but Centre was able to fight through and score two goals in the final three minutes of overtime to take the 19-18 win. Mastey and sophomore Annie Jonakin (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) scored the two goals for Centre in overtime.
The Colonels finished the game with 33 shots, 18 ground-balls, and they went 7-11 on clear attempts. Birmingham Southern had 35 shots, 20 ground-balls, and they were successful on four of their five clear attempts.
Esterle had 12 saves in the win and Bates finished with nine.
Mastey and Hawthorne each had six goals on the evening, while Hawthorne also recorded five ground-balls and two caused-turnovers.
Voorhis led the Panthers in scoring with eight goals on 16 shots. Stephanie Gore grabbed seven ground-balls and she had two caused turnovers. Logan Harris also had two caused turnovers for Birmingham Southern.
