Box Score The Centre College field hockey team scored three goals in the first period en-route to a 4-1 win against in-state rival Transylvania University Sunday, Sept. 18 in Lexington, Ky.
The Colonels, which avoided a three-match losing skid with the win, even their record at 3-3 overall, while Transylvania falls to 2-4 on the year.
Junior Sarah Jessee (Louisville, Ky.) opened the scoring early in the first period when she hit the back of the cage only 2:39 into the match to give Centre an 1-0 advantage.
About eight minutes later, sophomore Leah Storch (Louisville, Ky.) scored off an assist from senior Katy Meyer (Louisville, Ky.) for a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore Chelsea Klein (Louisville, Ky.) added to the lead at the 16:18 mark when she beat the Transylvania keeper off an assist from Jessee put the Colonels ahead 3-0.
Centre got a second half goal from junior Barbara Parks (Chapel Hill, N.C.) to go out in front 4-0 and cap the scoring for the Colonels.
The Pioneers scored their lone goal later in the second half, but it wasn't enough as Centre finished with the 4-1 victory.
The Colonels held a 30-9 advantage in shots on the day as well as an 11-3 edge in penalty corners. Sophomore Cece Lindsey (Louisville, Ky.) earned the win in goal for Centre. LIndsey stopped eight of the nine shots she faced.
The Colonels will open their 2011 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) schedule Friday, Sept. 23 when they host Sewanee-University of the South. Start time is set for 4 p.m. at Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky.
