Box Score Centre's field hockey team opened the 2011 season and Jenelle Anthony's tenure as head coach in dominant fashion, defeating Kenyon College 6-1 Saturday at Farris Stadium.
The Colonels wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Erin Bacon (Williamsburg, Va.) scored on an assist from Chelsea Klein (Louisville, Ky.), followed minutes later by a Barbara Parks (Chapel Hill, N.C.) goal off an assist from Katy Meyer (Louisville, Ky.).
Kenyon answered with a goal by Sammy Johnston to cut the margin to 2-1 at halftime, but it would prove to be the Ladies' only score on the day. Center goalkeeper Patty Cowley (Louisville, Ky.) went on to shut out kenyon in the second half and had three saves on the day. Kenyon's Sydney Carney had eight saves as Centre outshot the Ladies 19-6 for the game.
After taking a slim lead into the second half, the Colonels poured it on late. Parks added a second goal on an assist from Courtney Kuiper (Louisville, Ky.) before Center scored three in the final five minutes, two coming from Klein and another from Julia Rogers just before time expired. Kuiper led the team with two assists on the day.
With the victory, Centre improves to 1-0 on the season, dropping Kenyon to 0-1 in the first contest for both teams. Both teams return to action Sunday at Farris Stadium, with Centre taking on Wooster and Kenyon facing Rhodes.
