Box Score With the score tied at 1-1 and time running out, the Centre College field hockey team scored with less than a minute to play to defeat Rhodes College 2-1 Friday, Sept. 30 in Danville, Ky.
With the win, the Colonels have now won three straight to improve to 6-3 overall and 2-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), while Rhodes falls to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in league play.
Centre broke through first when sophomore Courtney Kuiper (Louisville, Ky.) scored her fourth goal of the season at the 16:22 mark in the first period off an assist from junior Barbara Parks (Chapel Hill, N.C.). It was Parks' fifth assist of the season.
The Lynx answered just over a minute later when Sarah Ferguson hit the back of the cage off an assist from Kat Simpson to knot the game at one apiece.
The score remained tied until junior Sarah Jessee (Louisville, Ky.) notched the game-winner, her third of the year, with only 34 seconds left to play. Junior Sydney White (Louisville, Ky.) had the assist, her second of the season.
Centre edged the Lynx in shots 20-19 and had a 9-8 advantage in penalty corners. Senior Patty Cowley (Louisville, Ky.) earned the win in goal for the Colonels. Cowley stopped 12 shots in the win.
Centre will next host Hendrix College Sunday, Oct. 2. The SCAC contest is set to start at 11 a.m. in Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky.
