Box Score Five Centre players scored in double figures as the Colonels turned a halftime tie into a 70-55 win over the Hendrix Warriors in Conway, Ark. The win was the tenth in a row for Centre, who improved to 13-1 on the year.
The Colonels held the Warriors to 31.6% shooting from the field and 15% shooting from beyond the arc in the 15-point win. Centre was also able to force Hendrix into committing 16 turnovers for the game while the Colonels only committed ten.
Senior Maggie Prewitt (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) led all scorers with 18 points. She also recorded six rebounds and five assists. Junior Chelsea Benham (Taswell, Ind.) scored 12 points while sophomore Paige Baechle (Gallatin, Tenn.) added 11 points and eight rebounds. Senior Lauren Huter (Louisville, Ky.) posted a double double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Alyson Burke (Harrodsburg, Ky.) rounded out the Centre double figure scorers with ten points.
Centre got off to a slow start against the Warriors, falling behind 24-13 on a Jamie Tate layup with 7:28 remaining in the first half. The Colonels tied the game at 27 on a 14-3 run as the two teams went into halftime. Centre got a balanced scoring effort late in the first half as six Colonels made baskets during their 14-3 run.
The two teams traded baskets to start the second half. A basket by senior Cailynn West (Los Angeles, Calif.) gave the Colonels a six-point edge at 38-32. Hendrix called a timeout and went on a small run of their own, taking their final lead of the game at 45-44. Centre responded in kind with a 13-3 run thanks to baskets by Prewitt, Baechle and freshman Hillary Moore (Hyden, Ky.). After the Warriors closed the gap to five points, Benham made consecutive buckets to push the lead back to nine, and Hendrix never threatened again. Centre shot 61.5% in the second half and held Hendrix to 27.3% shooting in the final frame. They also held the Warriors without a three-pointer in the second half.
The next game for the Centre women's basketball team will be on Friday, January 20, as they will play host to Southwestern.
