Box Score The Centre Volleyball Team turned in what is arguably their best performance to date this season as they beat Birmingham Southern this afternoon, 25-22, 26-24, 25-12. Just three weeks ago Birmingham Southern swept the Colonels in three sets: Not only did Centre "return the favor" today, but also they knocked their strong adversary out of a first-place tie in the conference.
Neatly summing up the likely good feeling from the Colonels point of view was Ms. Sharon Stivers, mother of junior
Kary Stivers (Louisville, KY): "It was so much fun watching Centre! We need to play this wonderfully all of the time!" (Head Coach
James Neyhouse was heard to remark that 80 percent of the time would be a "satisfactory" first step.)
Leading the way in blocks was
Lydia Prevost, the junior from Knoxville, TN, with nine; and she had firm support from sophomores
Celia Moser (Troy, OH) who had five, and
Suzanne Asbury (Louisville, KY) with three, the latter number matched by
Catherine Janszen, the Cincinnati, OH junior.
More heroics for the offense were well distributed; and, when that is the case, desirable results often are a consequence for the Colonels. Moser hit .350, and led her team in kills with eight, one more than both junior
Kimberly Lownds (Evergreen, CO) and freshman
Beth Cecil, who hails from Bardstown, KY.
Lownds also managed to hit a mere .500, as did her classmate
Shelby Shelton, from Scottsville, KY. Owensboro, KY freshman Jessica Peak made the most of her playing time by achieving a hitting efficiency of .667. Prevost complemented her determined defense by hitting .300.
Freshman
Paige Poggemeier (St. Charles, MO) had a couple of service aces. Asbury added another.
The bottom lines are these: Coach Neyhouse has offered the opinion that Centre Volleyball has the potential to be "a top 30 team." They played this afternoon as if they believe him.
