Box Score The Centre men's basketball team held off a second half comeback by Asbury to pull out a 66-59 victory Wednesday in Danville, Ky.
Sophomore forward Josh Karsner (Frankfort, Ky.) led Centre in scoring for the third time in three games this year and hit a crucial 3-pointer in the closing minutes while freshman center Blake Scinta (Louisville, Ky.) added 13 points off the bench.
After trading scores early, Centre took command when a jumper by Chris Taylor (Louisville, Ky.) at the 15 minute mark began a 13-2 run that gave the Colonels a 24-13 lead. Centre would go on to increase that lead to as many as 13 points on two occasions in the first half before taking a 35-23 lead to the halftime break.
Centre matched its biggest lead again in the second half when a layup by Scinta with 9:56 to play made the score 54-41. It was at that point when Adam Delph, who led all scorers with 21 points, scored eight points in a 13-2 Eagles run that made the score 56-54 with just over 3:00 to play.
Karsner made a pair of free throws to extend the lead back to 58-54, then after a layup by Asbury's Justin Jones, Karsner knocked down a 3-pointer to go up 61-56 just inside the 2-minute mark. After a missed layup by Asbury, Centre's Bryon Ellis (Russell Springs, Ky.) made another 3-pointer to give the Colonels some breathing room at 64-56 with less than a minute to play.
Overall, Centre shot 49 percent (23-of-47) from the field to 34 percent (23-of-68) for Asbury and made 45 percent (9-of-20) of its shots from outside to the Eagles' 35 percent (7-of-20). Centre held a 42-32 edge on the glass while Asbury won the turnover battle, giving the ball away just seven times to the Colonels' 18.
Centre moves to 2-1 on the season with the victory while Asbury falls to 5-2. Centre returns to action Sunday at Hanover.
