Box Score In the final home game for 17 seniors the Centre College football team fell 45-14 to visiting Birmingham Southern College Saturday, Nov. 3 at Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels, who saw their three-game winning streak snapped, fall to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in the SAA, while Birmingham Southern improves to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Panthers' quarterback Jimmy Stainback hit Michael Cowan for a 45-yard touchdown pass on their first possession of the game, and Birmingham Southern did not look back.
The Panthers went up 14-0 later in the first quarter, but saw that lead cut in half when junior running back Harry Meisner (Wyoming, Ohio) snapped off a 50-yard touchdown run with 49 seconds left in the opening period.
Birmingham Southern added a field goal and another touchdown in the second quarter to go in front 24-7. The Colonels cut the lead to 24-14 at the half when sophomore quarterback Heath Haden (Kingsport, Tenn.) tossed a 37-yard touchdown pass to junior receiver Austin Jones (Louisville, Ky.).
That would be the last score of the game for Centre as the Panthers scored 21 unanswered points in the second half for the 31-point victory.
Birmingham Southern out-gained the Colonels 600-325 in total offensive yards, including 287 yards on the ground. Centre gained 160 yards on the ground with Meisner accounting for a career-high 142 yards on 18 carries (7.9 avg.).
The Colonels will play their season-finale Saturday, Nov. 10 against Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. The SAA game is set to start at 1 p.m. CDT.
