The Centre College men's tennis team opened its 2012 season with a hard-fought 5-4 loss to Asbury University, Friday, Feb. 17 at the Bluegrass Tennis Club in Lexington, Ky.
After dropping the number one and two singles matches, the Colonels picked up four straight wins. Freshman Trey Williamson (Nashville, Tenn.) won No. 3 singles 6-3, Ret. Freshman Woody Rini (Richmond, Ky.) dropped the first set 3-6, but won the next two 6-4 and 7-5 to win at No. 4.
Junior Lucas Kelley (Maryville, Tenn.) earned a win at No. 5 6-2, 6-3 and freshman Packer Lawson (Prospect, Ky.) won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6.
Centre was unable to win any of the double matches, falling 8-1 in the first match, followed by two close losses in the last two (9-8 and 8-6).
The Colonels (0-1) will next travel to Charleston, W.V. to play the University of Charleston Saturday, Feb. 25. The match is set to start at 1 p.m.
