Box Score The Centre men's lacrosse team opened its season on a positive note, cruising to a 22-2 win over Alma College on Sunday at Farris Stadium.
The Colonels set a new school record for goals in a game with 22 after scoring 21 twice last year in wins over Oglethorpe and Millsaps.
Peter Murphy (Louisville, Ky.) led Centre with four goals, with Scott Hughes (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Zack Connors (Louisville, Ky.) and Patrick Evans (Louisville, Ky.) adding three goals each. In all, 11 Colonels scored in the game. Connor Stubbs (Decatur, Ga.) led the team with five assists while Connors had three and Murphy two.
Centre wasted no time in getting started, with Hughes scoring the first goal of the game just 25 seconds in. The Colonels pulled away early by scoring the first 12 goals of the game. Connors and Murphy each scored three goals in that stretch while Hughes had two. Stubbs, Corey Krill (Louisville, Ky.), Wesley Hardman (Narragansett, R.I.) and Eamon Delay (Hempstead, N.Y.) also scored for Centre to make the lead 12-0 before Matthew Gillespie got Alma on the board just before halftime.
Evans scored all three of his goals in the second half, while Murphy, Stubbs, Hughes, Hardman, Phillip Malloy (Louisville, Ky.), Sam Rush (Cornelius, N.C.) and Justin Norris (Deep River, Conn.) also found the net for the Colonels after halftime. Timothy DeFilippo scored Alma's second goal at the 4:09 mark in the third quarter.
In all, Centre outshot Alma 65-16. Clayton Brown and Bryce McCoy each made one save in goal for Centre while Alma's Daric Mueller made 17 stops.
The Colonels return to action Saturday at Hanover College.
