Centre women defeat Augustana 15-7 for third straight win

Box Score

Centre picked up its third win in three days by defeating Augustana College 15-7 in women's lacrosse action Monday at Farris Stadium.

Sarah Mastey (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Meg Hawthorne (Cary, N.C.) and Audrey Powers (Chattanooga, Tenn.) each had four goals to lead the Colonels' balanced scoring attack while Emily Madden (Louisville, Ky.) led the team with four assists.

Willis opened the scoring just 35 seconds into the game on a free position shot, with Augustana's Christina Letmanski answering moments later to tie. It was then that Centre began to build its commanding lead, scoring the next seven goals while holding Augustana scoreless for nearly 24 minutes. Hawthorne scored three times during the stretch with Willis adding another, Mastey getting her first score and assisting on another goal by Powers.

Letmanski scored on a free position shot just before halftime to cut the margin to 8-2, and Augustana began to chip into the lead early in the second half. Powers scored on a goal two minutes into the half only to see Letmanski and Hilary Kargl answer with two scores to make the score 9-4.

After Mastey picked up her second goal of the game with 11:37 to play, Kargl and Allie Roehrenbeck came back with two more for Augustana to cut the margin to 10-6. With the Vikings threatening, Centre answered the call with Hawthorne scoring on an assist from Madden and Powers scoring off an assist by Mastey just eight seconds apart to push the lead back out to 12-6 with five minutes to play.

Kelly Stelzer put up one last goal for Augustana to make the score 12-7, but Powers answered with a goal and Mastey with two to close the game out.

Centre went on to outshoot Augustana 33-27, held a 12-10 advantage in draw controls and a 34-19 edge in ground balls. Centre's Alison Eisner made 20 saves in goal while Sarah Osier made 18 stops for Augustana.

Centre moves to 3-0 on the season with the win and will host Denison on Sunday.
