Box Score 2 The Centre softball team played its final two games in the March Mayhem tournament on Sunday. The Colonels lost to Allegheny 13-2 in five innings, then came back to defeat Manchester, 4-3.
Game 1 against Allegheny got off to a rough start as the Gators scored three runs in each of the first two innings. The Colonels picked up two runs on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Katie Martello (Nicholasville, Ky.) in the first inning and a base hit by freshman Hannah Simpson (Lexington, Ky.) in the fourth. Allegheny scored seven runs in the fifth inning to take a 13-2 lead and the Colonels could not answer in the bottom of the inning, ending the game with a 13-2 final.
Against Manchester in game 2, Centre picked up a run in the first inning when freshman Molly Ely (Riverside, Ill.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing home junior Chelsea Collard (Louisville, Ky.). After scoring three runs in the bottom of the first, Centre answered back with three of their own in the top of the second.
A series of walks, passed balls, stolen bases and wild pitches loaded the bases. A single by sophomore Ashley Christian (Kingsport, Tenn.) scored the first run, then freshman Stephanie Preston scored on an error. Then freshman Hannah Massengale (Lexington, Ky.) scored on a wild pitch to give Centre a 4-3 lead.
Both pitchers settled down the rest of the way with freshman starter Shawnee Shuler (Knoxville, Tenn.) striking out four batters before being relieved in the fifth by junior Emily Meador (Scottsville, Ky.), who worked her way out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth to keep the score at 4-3, where it remained through the final inning. Katie Martello picked up two of the Colonels' three hits for the game.
The next games for Centre softball will be a Saturday doubleheader against Franklin on March 17.
