Box Score The Centre women's lacrosse team picked up its second win of the weekend and moved to 2-0 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play with an 18-6 victory at Birmingham Southern on Sunday.
Audrey Powers (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Sarah Mastey each scored five goals to lead the Colonels, who improve to 10-2 on the season with the win. Birmingham Southern, which had won five straight coming into Sunday's game, falls to 6-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Birmingham Southern scored first, but Powers, Mastey and Meg Hawthorne (Cary, N.C.) all scored as Centre scored the next four goals to take the lead for good. Centre outscored BSC 4-3 over the rest of the first half to take a 8-4 lead to halftime.
It was the second half where the Colonels pulled away by scoring the first seven goals and holding the Panthers scoreless for the first 16 minutes. After Birmingham Southern finally found the net at the 13:55 mark, Centre came back with three more goals to extend the lead as high as 18-5.
Hawthorne finished with two goals and tied Powers for a team-high with three assists. Also scoring twice for the Colonels were Anne Carole Preuss (Louisville, Ky.) and Claiborne Willis (Nashville, Tenn.), while Emily Madden (Louisville, Ky.) and Katy Cremer (Hudson, Ohio) each had one goal.
Centre outshot Birmingham Southern 48-15 in the game and controlled 17 draws to BSC's nine. Colonels' goalie Lauren Esterle (Louisville, Ky.) made four saves.
Centre is off until an April 7 trip to Wooster followed by a game at Kenyon the next day.
