Box Score Centre pulled away in the second half to post a 19-8 victory over Aquinas in women's lacrosse action Wednesday at Farris Stadium.
Meg Hawthorne (Cary, N.C.) led the way for Centre with seven goals and three assists, scoring five of those goals as the team outscored Aquinas 12-4 in the second half. Sarah Mastey (Lexington, Ky.) added four goals while Anne Carole Preuss (Louisville, Ky.), Emily Madden (Louisville, Ky.) and Katy Cremer (Hudson, Ohio) each had two.
The Colonels never trailed after scoring the first five goals of the game with Audrey Powers starting off the scoring four minutes in and Mastey and Hawthorne following with two goals each. Meaghan Farrell of Aquinas got her team on the board just inside the 15 minute mark before Cremer assisted on a goal by Madden, then added one of her own on an assist by Maddie Baker (Louisville, Ky.) to make the score 7-1.
Aquinas put together a hint of a threat by scoring three times over the final 10 minutes of the first half to make the score 7-4, but it was as close as the Saints would get. Centre dominated the second half, beginning with goals by Mastey, Hawthorne, Preuss and Cremer over the first six minutes to make the score 11-4.
Aquinas scored three of the next four goals to cut the margin to 12-7, only to be outscored 7-1 by Centre over the last 14 minutes. Hawthorne scored four times during that stretch with Preuss, Madden and Claiborne Willis (Nashville, Tenn.) also finding the net for the Colonels.
Centre outshot Aquinas 51-21 in the game and held a 22-7 edge in draw controls. Lauren Esterle (Louisville, Ky.) and Allison Eisner (Louisville, Ky.) made four and two saves respectively for Centre while Breanne Stockall made 19 stops for Aquinas.
The Colonels return to action this weekend in Jackson, Miss. where they take on Shorter on Saturday and Millsaps on Sunday.
