A valiant comeback effort by the Centre women's tennis team fell short yesterday in Memphis, as the Colonels fell to the Birmingham Southern Panthers, 5-4.
Centre dropped the first two doubles matches of the contest, 8-6 and 8-1, but rebounded to win the third, 8-6, thanks to superb play from freshman Katie Howard (Frankfort, Ky.) and sophomore Maddie Pitt (Louisville, Ky.).
The Colonels got off to a good start in singles competition as sophomore Kathryn Hays (Lexington, Ky.) took the first match 7-6, 7-2. But the Panthers responded and won the next three contests.
Freshman Jenna Hazelwood (Lebanon, Tenn.) won the fifth singles match 6-1, 6-2, and Maddie Pitt took the final singles match 6-0, 2-6, 6-4, but the margin was too much to overcome to attain victory.
The next match for the Centre women's tennis team will be on April 17 when they play host to Bellarmine.
