Colonels fall 22-7 to BSC in SCAC Tournament semifinal

Box Score

The Centre men's lacrosse team saw its 2012 season come to an end Friday in a 22-7 loss to Birmingham Southern in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference semifinal in Birmingham, Ala.

Though the Colonels lost, the 2012 season will be remembered for a historic turnaround in which they finished with an overall record of 12-4 just one year after going 3-10 in their first year of competition. Centre also went 7-2 and tied for second place in SCAC play, went undefeated at home at 8-0 and will finish the year ranked in the top-10 nationally in several statistical categories.

Zack Connors (Louisville, Ky.) scored three goals to lead the Colonels on Friday while Wesley Hardman (Narragansett, R.I.) scored twice. Centre had trouble stopping Erik Klein, who had six goals and five assists for Birmingham Southern to finish one away from his own conference record of 12 points in a game.

The Colonels fell behind early as Klein scored the game's first three goals, and BSC went on to build a 10-1 lead by the 10:44 mark in the second quarter. In its best stretch of the game, Centre outscored Birmingham Southern 6-1 over a five minute span to trim the margin to 11-7 with five minutes to play in the first half, but it was all Birmingham Southern from that point.

The Panthers scored twice to take a 13-7 lead to the half, then added five more third quarter goals to go up 18-7. The Panthers went on to outscore Centre 4-0 in the fourth quarter.

Also scoring for Centre were Peter Murphy (Louisville, Ky.), who had a goal with two assists, and Scott Hughes (Chattanooga, Tenn.), who had a goal and an assist. Goalie Clayton Brown (Louisville, Ky.) made nine saves.
