Catching up with Centre baseball alum Mel Borland

What is your hometown?
Louisville, Kentucky

High School?
Waggener High School (Louisville, Ky.)

What year did you graduate from Centre?
1964

What was your major/minor?
Economics major with serveral minors

What position(s) did you play?
Pitcher and at least one game at every other position except shortstop and catcher. As I remember, Gary Wright played every game and every inning at short, and I wasn't about to catch. George Rush, Dick Rankin, and a couple of others over the four years handled that real well.

What coaches did you play for at Centre?
Briscoe Inman, Spencer Holt and Steele Harmon in baseball; Joe Brummett, Alex Stevens and Lew Phillips in basketball

What are your favorite Centre baseball moments?
I remember well the story concerning Turkey Hughes (the coach at Eastern Kentucky University at the time associated with the story) that others have mentioned. After the game in question, he walked into our locker room and joined in conversation with Dick Rankin, Raymey Simpson, and me. It was indeed unusual that an opposing coach would join us as such. After a while, one of them (Dick or Raymey) just asked him what he was doing in there. His response was also unusual, but appreciated. He simply said that if he couldn't beat us, he'd join us. We had beaten him three times, at least with which I am familiar - twice our freshman year and then in the game in question our senior year. Bill Garriott made a great catch against the right field fence late in that game to secure that win.

In the first game against Eastern our freshman year, we were up 1 or 2-0 at their place going into the bottom of the ninth. It had been a game involving some ridicule - particularly with respect to how hard I threw. It was the first time that I heard (though it had probably previously been said) that I needed a relay man to better get it from the mound to home. Nevertheless, at the time just before the start of the ninth inning, Briscoe Inman (our coach) stopped play, walked up to George Rush (our catcher) and took the mitt off his left hand. Coach Inman examined George's hand and pretended concern that George may not be able to continue, following the abuse it had suffered, given how hard I threw. He seemed uncertain, but let George continue.

After that game, coaches Inman and Hughes were talking as they gathered up equipment. Hughes asked Inman who he was going to pitch the next week when Eastern would come over to our field to play. Inman just said that it would probably be a freshman again and left.

Any other favorite team moments?
Many

What was your favorite win?
The senior year game against Eastern

Do you have a family? If so, please list names of children.
Paula (wife, Centre graduate), Jeff (son), Angel (daughter-in-law), and Jacob (grandson)

How are you still involved with baseball? Coaching, playing, umpiring, etc.?
I went out to watch my son and daughter-in-law practice for the church slow-pitch softball team last year. One thing led to another and I ended up playing that season. It was real close to a bad idea.
