Centre Volleyball Wins in Conference Debut

Box Score

The Centre College Volleyball Team beat Berry College (Rome, Georgia) today in Centre's first-ever match in its new conference, the Southern Athletic Association (SAA). The afternoon began with a professional-quality unaccompanied rendition of the National Anthem by freshman Beth Cecil (Bardstown, KY).

Berry did not make it easy: They defeated Centre in games one and four by identical 25-20 scores. In between, though, Centre won a tense game two by two points (after breaking a tie at 23), and followed that up nicely with a seven-point victory. In game five Centre returned to its game three form, and after splitting the first six points pulled steadily away to a 15-8 victory. As Dennis Foushee (father of Centre Volleyball's senior class) summarized very accurately, "It was impressive that we learned to maintain the lead, and it was equally good to see many players contribute."

In support of Mr. Foushee's analysis, the statistical leadership in five principal categories was divided among five individuals. Sophomore Suzanne Asbury (Louisville, KY), who is first in the league in blocks, also managed to lead Centre today with eight blocks, while Centre's lone senior, Tri-Captain Jenna Foushee (Louisville, KY), paced the Colonels in digs with 13. The aforementioned Beth Cecil celebrated her return from an injury with nine kills, and junior Tri-Captain Kary Stivers (Lousville, KY) spread the ball around with her 20 assists. Centre's third Tri-Captain, Lydia Prevost, a junior who represents Knoxville, TN had three blocks (She is sixth in the SAA.), hit .312, and had three service aces (high for Centre for this match).

Head Coach James Neyhouse offered, "Mr. Foushee is exactly on target: We had contributions across the board from our team members. With play like that tomorrow," (Centre competes against Oglethorpe.), "we'll give ourselves an excellent opportunity to remain tied for first in the SAA."
