Box Score After falling behind early, a late comeback attempt by Centre fell short as the Colonels dropped a 5-3 decision to Christopher Newport in field hockey action Sunday in Danville, Ky.
Centre found itself in a hole after Christopher Newport scored three times in the first 16 minutes of the game, two of those coming from the Captains' Caitlin Cahill. Though Chelsea Klein (Louisville, Ky.) got the Colonels on the board with an unassisted goal at the 16:25 mark, Christopher Newport answered with a goal by Taylor Young to make the score 4-1 going into the half.
Just after the second half opened, Belle Tunstall scored to build the Christopher Newport lead to its highest point at 5-1. At that point, Centre began to climb back into the game, with Erin Bacon (Williamsburg, Va.) assisting on a Sydney White (Louisville, Ky.) and Barbara Parks (Chapel Hill, N.C.) setting up Courtney Kuiper (Louisville, Ky.) on a goal to make the score 5-3.
Though those goals pulled the Colonels within striking distance with five minutes to play, it was the last either team would score. The loss drops Centre to 0-2 on the season while Christopher Newport improves to 2-0.
Christopher Newport outshot Centre 30-12 on the game and held a 15-10 edge in penalty corners. Centre's CeCe Lindsey (Louisville, Ky.) made eight saves in the cage while Jamie Dowling had two for Christopher Newport.
Centre returns to action Saturday when it opens Southern Athletic Association play at Sewanee.
