Centre gets overtime win on Stick It To Cancer Night

Box Score

The Centre field hockey team won in dramatic fashion in its annual Stick It To Cancer Night game, defeating NCAA Division II opponent Bellarmine 2-1 on an overtime goal by Chelsea Klein on Wednesday in Danville, Ky.

With a large crowd out for the game, which serves as a fundraiser for the National Foundation for Cancer Research, the Colonels got on the board less than two minutes in when Alexis Hebert (Chapel Hill, N.C.) scored on an assist from Erin Bacon (Williamsburg, Va.). Just before halftime, Bellarmine's Shelby Daeschner scored what would go on to be the last goal of regulation.

With the two teams tied at one, Centre opened the overtime on the attack, outshooting the Knights 6-0. It was seven minutes into the overtime period when Centre finally broke through when Klein, a junior from Louisville, Ky., collected a deflected shot and fired it into the cage for the winning score.

It was a welcome victory for the Colonels, who had already lost one overtime game and had been on the wrong end of three one-goal games this season. Each team took 17 shots in the game, and Bellarmine held an 8-7 advantage in penalty corners. Centre goalie Cece Lindsey made four saves while Bellarmine's Megan Martiny had six stops.

Centre improves to 3-4 on the year with the victory while Bellarmine drops to 4-4. Centre returns to Southern Athletic Association play when it hosts Transylvania on Saturday.
