Benham's huge game leads Centre to 67-55 win over Hendrix

Box Score

Senior forward Chelsea Benham (Taswell, Ind.) posted game-highs with 29 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Centre women's basketball team to a 67-55 win over Hendrix College Friday, Jan. 25 in Danville, Ky.

After beginning the season 3-9, the Colonels have now won five straight games to improve to 8-9 overall and 6-1 in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA). Hendrix remains winless on the year and falls to 0-18 overall and 0-7 in league play.

The Warriors jumped out to an 8-4 lead, but a three-pointer by senior guard Bridget Winstead (Franklin, Tenn.) and a pair of lay-ups by Benham put Centre in front to stay.

The Colonels built an eight-point lead with 10:28 left in the opening half and stretched it to as many as 16 before taking a 37-24 lead into the locker room.

Hendrix came out firing in the second half using a 12-2 run to cut the lead to one at 39-38, but the home team answered with an 8-2 run to go back in front by seven with 13:42 to go.

The Warriors got within four (49-45) at the 11:21 mark, only to see the Colonels slowly pull away for the 12-point victory.

Hendrix shot better from the field (41.1% to 38.6%) than Centre, but the Warriors were out-rebounded by 20 (50-30), including a 17-3 advantage in offensive rebounds for the Colonels.

In 35 minutes of action, Benham made 13 of her 22 shots (59.1%) from the field, including both free throw attempts and her only three-point attempt for her second double-double in the last four games.

Joining Benham in double figures was junior Paige Baechle (Gallatin, Tenn.) and sophomore Hillary Moore (Hyden, Ky.) Baechle also had a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds, while Moore added 13 points and three rebounds off the bench.

Jamie Tate and Caitlyn Kriesel-Bigler paced Hendrix. Tate tallied team-highs with 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Kriesel-Bigler finished with 14 points, four steals and two assists.

Centre will look to get back to .500 Sunday, Jan. 27 against current SAA leader Rhodes College. Start time is set for 1 p.m. in Alumni Gymnasium in Danville, Ky.
