Box Score The Centre women's basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak by pulling out a 67-66 win over Birmingham-Southern on a Mary Winstead free throw with three seconds remaining in a Southern Athletic Association game Sunday in Birmingham, Ala.
Centre's Paige Baechle (Gallatin, Tenn.) again led the way with game-highs of 26 points and 13 rebounds for her sixth straight double double. Bridget Winstead (Franklin, Tenn.) and Chelsea Benham (Taswell, Ind.) also reached double figures for the Colonels with 11 and 10 points respectively while Caroline King and Alex Adams led Birmingham-Southern with 17 each.
Eighteen of Baechle's points came in the first half, which helped the Colonels keep pace after falling behind early. The Panthers scored the first seven points of the game, later extended the lead to 15-5 after an 8-0 run and went on to lead by as many as 15 points at 29-15 after another 7-0 spurt midway through the half.
Baechle helped the Colonels get back within striking distance by scoring eight points in a 10-2 run to close the half and make the score 36-30 going to the break. After BSC opened the second half with an Erin Moore layup, Centre stormed back and took its first lead at 39-38 with three straight 3-pointers.
The game would go back and forth the rest of the way with 12 ties, 11 lead changes and neither team holding a lead of more than three points. The game went into the final two minutes tied at 62 with King making a pair of free throws to put the Panthers up and Baechle matching it with two free throws to tie on the following possession. Birmingham-Southern went up 66-64 on an Adams layup with 51 seconds to play, only to be tied again when Maggie Hartlage (Louisville, Ky.) answered with a layup for Centre.
The Colonels were finally able to gain the lead for good by forcing a Panther turnover with 14 seconds remaining and Mary Winstead drawing a foul on the ensuing possession. Winstead missed the first shot but made the second to secure the victory.
Centre shot 43.4 percent (23-of-53) overall and 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from 3-point range while BSC shot 37.3 percent (22-of-59) overall and 36.4 percent (8-of-22) from outside. The Colonels held a 38-33 advantage on the glass and turned the ball over 15 times to the Panthers' 12.
The Colonels improve to 4-9 on the season and 2-1 in SAA competition while Birmingham-Southern falls to 5-8 overall and 1-2 in the conference. Centre returns home to take on Sewanee on Saturday at 1 p.m.
