Box Score 1 With wins earlier today over Brescia and Berea, the Centre College Volleyball Team set a school mark in their sport with a regular-season winning percentage of 85 percent, based on 22 victories and four losses. Head Coach James Neyhouse reacted, "That's great, and I'm duly grateful. I wonder if the other teams in our tournament" (The Colonels open against Sewanee at Berry next Friday, November 8, at 5:30 P.M.) "will still be willing to play us."
With the splendid success of the "Gold" this fall, the Colonels' three talented freshmen, Jasmine Cline-Bailey (Cincinnati, OH), Shelby Foote (Prospect, KY), and Katherine Hagan (Whitesville, KY) have not enjoyed too many opportunities on the court. In the Brescia triumph (25-8, 25-23, 25-12), though, all played and showed why Neyhouse has reflected more than once, "Most seasons they" (the freshmen) "would probably have played more, maybe a lot more." Cline-Bailey joined Beth Cecil (Bardstown, KY), the sophomore hitter, in ringing up an average of 1.000. Foote and Hagan hit .556 and .333, respectively; with five kills apiece.
Sophomores dominated service aces: Abbigale Jacobi (Louisville, KY) led with four, while Elizabeth Janszen (Cincinnati, OH) and Erin McGrath (Louisville, KY) each supplied three, as did Foote. McGrath led her team in digs with eight. Centre's two fine middles, senior Lydia Prevost (Knoxville, TN) and junior Suzanne Asbury (Louisville, KY) each blocked twice. Prevost also hit .615 on eight kills, a sum matched by sophomore Jessica Peak (Owensboro, KY), who, in addition, managed an average of .538.
For the Berea conquest (25-21, 25-17, 25-15), Asbury killed on 11 occasions, good for an average of .667. The Colonels two setters, senior Kary Stivers (Louisville, KY) and Janszen shared equally on 30 assists. Jacobi tacked on two more aces, for a two-match total of six.
In the blocking category, Asbury had nine; Peak three; and Prevost and Cecil each two. Sophomore Paige Poggemeier (St. Charles, MO) collected 15 digs, four more than Cecil.
The two matches did not, in fact, end the competition for the day. This evening, CCVB will celebrate with its annual Halloween Bash; and costumes (most often organized by each class, who has chosen its theme, and employed considerable creative ingenuity in its presentation)will be judged. The Gold medalists will have their names engraved on a plaque that will remain on display forever.
