Helping to cap off the splendid "Gold" volleyball season, the Southern Athletic Association recognized seven Colonels. Included were the entire senior class, Catherine Janszen (Cincinnati, OH), Kimberly Lownds (Evergreen, CO), Lydia Prevost (Knoxville, TN), and Kary Stivers (Louisville, KY). Junior Suzanne Asbury (Louisville, KY), and sophomores Beth Cecil (Bardstown, KY) and Paige Poggemeier (St. Charles, MO) also were acclaimed.
Janszen and Asbury earned positions on the All-Conference First Team. "Catherine Janszen is as fine an all-around player as I've been privileged to coach," declared Head Coach James Neyhouse. "She could lead our team in digs one match, and kills the next, or maybe both. And that is when she is not putting up a block, or serving an ace." With respect to Asbury, her coach's brief comment spoke volumes about her importance to the Centre side. "Her blocking influenced our opponents to change their offensive patterns, and that usually hurt them and helped us."
Colonels dominated the All-SAA Second Team as Stivers, Cecil, and Poggemeier were all named to it. Assistant Coach Paul Bowling remarked, "It will be quieter on the court without Kary;" (Stivers) "but for her, it is all about bringing out the best in her teammates and herself. As for Beth," (Cecil) "she proved that, as awesome as her hitting can be, she can block and dig too."
After twice this fall being chosen the Defensive Player-of-the-Week, Poggemeier simply went ahead to win the title of Defensive Player of the Year. As the SAA press release stated, Poggemeier led the conference in digs per set (with 5.69) "despite playing behind the top-ranked blocking squad in the league." In addition, she "set the Centre record for most digs in a three set match."
Prevost received All-Conference Honorable Mention; but, according to Neyhouse, "I would place her even higher. Lydia was a consistently steady force for us, and certainly played a huge role in our successes."
Lownds represented Centre on the All-Sportsmanship Team. "An excellent selection," summarized Neyhouse.
Centre College ended the 2013 campaign garnering the eighth position in the South Regional Rankings of Division III in the NCAA. "Not where we hoped to finish," acknowledged Neyhouse. "The four schools" (Berry twice) "who beat us sometimes stand out more in my memory than our victories" (23 in total). "In sum, as Jim Janszen" (father of Catherine) "pointed out after a win 10 weeks ago, 'Winning the match is better than losing.' However, I am grateful for the many high points achieved by our team."
