Baseball drops season-opener 9-0 to Berea

Box Score

The Centre College baseball team opened its 2013 season Monday, Feb. 18 and lost 9-0 to Berea College in Berea, Ky.

Following a scoreless first, Berea got to senior starting pitcher Joe Nash (Elizabethtown, Ky.) in the second inning. Nash induced a ground out for the first out, but allowed back-to-back doubles to score the first run.

Another ground out moved the runner to third with two outs, and he would score on a error on the very next pitch to make it 2-0.

The score stayed that way until the fifth. With two outs and a runner on second, Mikey Scott hit a 3-2 pitch over the left field fence for a two-run home run to make it 4-0.

The Mountaineers added another run in the sixth and a pair in both the seventh and eighth innings each for the final 9-0 tally.

The Colonels had only three runners reach second base through the first eight innings. With one out in the ninth, Centre loaded the bases with the help of two errors and a hit-by-pitch, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the game.

The Colonels managed only five hits on the evening. Junior Sean Cole (Teaneck, N.J.) had a pair of infield singles and a walk in three official at-bats.

Nash took the loss in the opener. The senior allowed four runs - three earned - on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 4.2 innings.

Centre will return to action Saturday, Feb. 23 with a home doubleheader against the College of Mount St. Joseph. First pitch of game one is set for 2 p.m. at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky.
