Centre drops a pair to No. 22 Birmingham Southern

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

After dropping the first game 11-2, the Centre College baseball team fell 4-2 in game two to lose both ends of a doubleheader to No. 22 Birmingham Southern Saturday, March 30 in Danville, Ky.

Following a scoreless first inning by both teams, Centre junior starting pitcher Kyle Neu (Cincinnati, Ohio) was forced to leave the game after a line drive struck his hand to start the inning.

Freshman pitcher Stephen Shunk (Lexington, Ky.) relieved Neu and worked his way out of the second without allowing any runs.

The Colonels took the lead in the bottom of the inning when senior Aaron Ammann (Winnetka, Calif.) singled home freshman Jake Johnson (Louisville, Ky.) for a 1-0 lead.

That lead lasted until the fourth when the Panthers scored two runs each in both the fourth and fifth innings and then added four in the sixth to take an 8-1 lead.

Centre was not able to recover as the Colonels four relievers allowed 11 runs on 14 hits with five walks and three hit batters.

Shunk took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season. Ammann, Johnson, and sophomore Trey Litsey (Louisville, Ky.) finished with multiple hits in the first game. Ammann and Litsey both went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Johnson finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Game two was scoreless until the fifth as both starting pitchers were in control. The Colonels scored a run in the bottom of the fifth when Johnson scored on a two-out wild pitch.

That lead was short-lived as Birmingham Southern answered with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to take a 2-1 lead.

The Panthers (20-8 overall, 11-1 SAA) added to their lead with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh, but Centre was only able to score once in the bottom of the inning to fall 4-2.

Senior pitcher Tommy Munoz (Ft. Myers, Fla.) was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs on only three hits over five innings of work. He walked one and struck out two.

Centre, now 10-13 overall and 4-8 in the SAA, will step out of conference play to host Thomas More College Wednesday, April 3. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky.
