Centre College Volleyball traveled to Berry, and the result today was the home team's sweep of the match (22-25, 21-25, 15-25). Berry was strong last year when Centre inflicted the only league defeat on the Vikings, who sailed to both the regular-season and the tournament championships of the Southern Athletic Association. Furthermore, Berry remains tough this time around: "They played very well; they executed when they had to," recapped
James Neyhouse, Centre's Head Coach, about the Vikings. "On the other side of the court, we struggled to execute at crucial times. However, we never quit; but our determination was not matched by the quality of play that is needed to beat a team of Berry's caliber. Tomorrow in Atlanta" (against Oglethorpe) "I'm confident that we'll prove ourselves resilient; but, if we want a different outcome, we have to couple that effort with a much higher level of performance."
Lydia Prevost, the senior from Knoxville, TN, led in blocks with two. Sophomore
Paige Poggemeier (St. Charles, MO) paced the Colonels with 17 digs. Her classmate
Beth Cecil (Bardstown, KY) generated 10 kills, one fewer than the junior class:
Suzanne Asbury (Louisville, KY) contributed six, and
Celia Moser (Troy, OH) had an even handful.
Kary Stivers (Louisville, KY), a senior, hit .667 and had five kills, achieved from her setter position, as she celebrated her welcome return from an injury. Prevost connected four times, and sophomore
Jessica Peak was good for three while her hitting average was a cool .750.
Sophomore
Elizabeth Janszen (Cincinnati, OH), had 14 assists, and Stivers, still in her setter role, produced 10.
Erin McGrath (Louisville, KY), yet one more sophomore, notched the only three service aces for Centre.
The Colonels have now won six of their eight attempts this campaign. Berry was the first league test for the "Gold".
