Centre women down Birmingham Southern 89-81 in SAA action

Box Score

The Centre College women's basketball team posted a season-high in points with an 89-81 win over Birmingham Southern Sunday, Jan. 12 in Danville, Ky.

The win marks the third straight for the Colonels after dropping three straight. Centre improves to 9-5 overall and remains unbeaten in SAA play at 3-0, while the Panthers fall to 6-7 overall and 2-1 in league play.

With the score tied at 8-8, the Colonels scored nine unanawered points to take a 17-8 lead at the 14:25 mark.

A Birmingham Southern three-pointer cut the lead to 17-11, but senior Paige Baechle (Gallatine, Tenn.) hit a couple of lay-ups and sophomore Alexis Guy (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) nailed a pair of three-pointers to push the lead to 27-13.

The Panthers pulled within nine with just under eight minutes left in the opening period, but Centre scored the next five points and would not lead by less than 10 the remainder of the half.

The Colonels continued to control the action in the second half as they extended the lead to 18 points with 12:27 to play, but Birmingham Southern would not go down quietly.

The Panthers used a 10-1 run to cut the lead to 69-60 at the 8:52 mark, and would get within six with less than 30 seconds to play, but the Colonels made their final seven free throws of the game to seal the victory.

Centre shot 40.9% (27-66) from the field, including nine of 22 (40.9%) from beyond the three-point arc and 26 of 32 (81.3%) from the charity stripe. The Colonels also out-rebounded the Panthers 50-26, including 16-7 on the offensive glass.

Six different players finished in double figures for Centre led by a pair of seniors. Baechle and Mary Gordon Stough (Louisville, Ky.) had a double-double each in the win. Baechle tallied game-highs in points (24) and rebounds (16), while Stough added 11 points and 14 rebounds. Juniors Maggie Hartlage (Louisville, Ky.) and Alanna Guy (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) had 14 points apiece, and Alexis Guy and sophomore Bonnie Rhule (Versailles, Ky.) finished with 11 points each.

Elizabeth Bromirski had a team-high 18 points for Birmingham Southern. Kayla Ford added 15 points off the bench, and Kelsey Brown chipped in 12 points, also off the bench.
