Box Score The Centre men's soccer team picked up its first Southern Athletic Association win of the season by rolling to a 4-0 win over Berry on Saturday in Danville, Ky.
Jacob Winkler (Danville, Ky.) and Pavel Terselich (Austin, Texas) each scored twice in the win, which was the Colonels' first over Berry since the 2012 regular season. Games between the two teams have been close recently, with Berry winning the 2012 SAA Tournament over Centre on penalty kicks and winning the 2013 meeting in the second overtime.
Saturday's match would be quite the opposite. The result was the largest margin the Colonels have won by this year, and the four goals were the team's most since a 4-0 win over Wilmington in 2013.
"I am really proud of our team because they have trusted the process," said Centre head coach Jeb Burch. "We have a great amount of respect for Berry soccer, and to go out and get four goals says a lot about our team right now."
Centre took the lead in the 24th minute when Winkler finished on a ball headed forward by Christian Gateskill (Danville, Ky.). The 1-0 lead held up through halftime, and the Colonels went on to add to it when Winkler picked up his second goal on a diving header off a cross from Cameron Miller (Nicholasville, Ky.).
Centre went on to put the game away, with a pair of late goals by Terselich. He scored his first on a strike from just outside the 18-yard box off a touch from Phillip Shehan (Orlando, Fla.), then added another when he scored on a free kick in the final seconds.
Centre took 18 shots to Berry's 15 in the game, and the Colonels held a 4-0 edge in corners. Ohan Missirian-Dill (Brentwood, Tenn.) made seven saves in net while Berry's Jon Nelson had five stops.
The win brings Centre's record to 4-2-4 overall and 1-0-1 in SAA play while Berry drops to 7-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Colonels are back on the road next weekend when they travel to take on Hendrix on Friday and Rhodes on Sunday.
