Colonels see winning streak snapped at Bellarmine

Box Score

The Centre field hockey team saw its eight-game winning streak snapped in a 4-2 loss at Bellarmine on Sunday in Louisville, Ky.

In a game where Centre fought back from a 2-0 second half deficit to tie the score, Bellarmine scored twice in the final four minutes to put the game away. The loss was the Colonels' first since falling to another Division II opponent, Lindenwood, at Bellarmine on Sept. 14. Centre comes away from the game with a 10-4 overall record with two of those losses coming to Division II opponents. Bellarmine improves to 6-4.

Despite the two-goal margin, the game was hard-fought throughout and went to halftime in a scoreless tie. All the scoring took place in the final 28 minutes, with Bellarmine jumping out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Kelsey O'Brien and Meghan Williams.

Centre answered with a goal by Nicole DeHerde (Hope, N.J.) off a rebound of a shot by Julie Gates (Louisville, Ky.), then tied the score with a goal from Hayley Barker (Louisville, Ky.) with just over four minutes remaining. Though the Colonels tied the score, it didn't remain that way for long, as Bellarmine took the lead back with a goal from Aimee Ilgenfritz at the 3:18 park, then put it away with another score by Kathryn Schneidtmiller less than a minute later.

Bellarmine held a 13-5 advantage on shots and a 10-5 edge on penalty corners. Kirby Roberts (Louisville, Ky.) made four saves in goal for Centre while Bellarmine's Lara Williams had two stops for Bellarmine.

Centre is back in action with a trip to Christopher Newport over the college's fall break. The Colonels take on Randolph-Macon on Thursday and Christopher Newport on Friday. The game with Christopher Newport will be a rematch of a 2013 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 matchup in which Centre fell 1-0 to CNU, which went on to finish as a national semifinalist.
