Box Score A day after winning in overtime, the Centre field hockey team suffered an overtime loss, falling 2-1 to Christopher Newport on Friday in Newport News, Va.
With the teams tied 1-1 after regulation, the Captains' Lisa Murphy provided the game-winner in the eighth minute of overtime. The result puts Christopher Newport's record at 9-5 on the season while Centre falls to 11-5. The loss also snaps a streak of nine straight wins by Centre over Division III opponents.
Friday's game was a rematch of an NCAA Tournament game from a year ago which was also a hard-fought contest decided by a Christopher Newport penalty stroke that went on to be the only goal of the game. After getting by Centre, the Captains went on to be national semifinalists in 2013.
In Friday's contest, Centre went up 1-0 when Julie Gates (Louisville, Ky.) scored her team-leading 12th goal of the year with 13 minutes remaining in the first half. That lead held up through halftime, until Allie Hackbarth pulled the Captains even with a goal 13 minutes into the second half. The score remained 1-1 through the end of regulation, and though the Colonels had two shot attempts and two penalty corners in overtime, Murphy came up with the game-winner for the Captains.
Overall, Christopher Newport held an 18-13 advantage in shots and a 14-5 edge in penalty corners, though each team put nine shots on goal. Centre goalkeeper Kirby Roberts (Louisville, Ky.) and Christopher Newport's Savanah Cummings each made seven saves.
After wrapping up their fall break road trip, the Colonels return home to face Sewanee on Saturday at noon.
