Box Score The Centre women's soccer team bounced back from a loss on Sunday with a 3-0 defeat of Birmingham-Southern on Friday in Danville, Ky.
Anne Mitchell (Fayetteville, Ark.), Destinie Graves (Lexington, Ky.), and Katie Downing (Dayton, Ohio) scored the goals for Centre, with Mitchell's being her team-leading seventh of the year and Graves' score being her fourth. Alex Combs (Danville, Ky.) picked up two assists with Brandy Orth-Becker (Newburgh, Ind.) providing the assist on the final goal.
The Colonels' first two goals were nearly identical, as both came on the rebound of shots by Combs. Mitchell (Fayetteville, Ark.) got Centre on the board in the 23rd minute when she was there to put away a rebound from a Combs shot from the top of the box that deflected off Birmingham-Southern goalkeeper Ansley Tomlin. Centre took that 1-0 lead to halftime, then added some cushion in the 54th minute when Graves followed up a Combs shot and put away the deflection off of Tomlin. With less than four minutes left in play, Downing helped put away the game by scoring on a cross from Orth-Becker.
Centre controlled possession through much of the match and took 20 shots to Birmingham-Southern's four, putting 11 of those on goal to the Panthers' four. The Colonels also held a 5-0 edge in corners. Olivia Alford (Louisville, Ky.) made four saves in the shutout, her fifth clean sheet of the year, while Tomlin had eight stops for Southern.
Centre improves to 10-5-1 overall and 2-3 in SAA competition while Birmingham-Southern drops to 8-5-1 overall and 2-3 in league play. The Colonels return to action on Sunday when they host Millsaps at noon.
