Box Score The Centre volleyball team came away with a dramatic victory in the opening round of the 2014 SAA tournament in Conway, Ark. as they defeated the Berry Vikings in five sets.
Berry grabbed an early lead in the first set and gradually built that lead as the set progressed en route to a 25-17 win. In the second set it was the Colonels who played well in the clutch, scoring five of the final six points of the set to come away with a 25-20 win and even the match. The Vikings answered back in the third set with their most impressive performance of the match, building a sizeable lead and not letting up, winning by a score of 25-14.
With the season on the line, Centre faced a 16-12 deficit, but fired back with six points in a row. Berry would regain the lead at 19-18, but Centre would make another late run, scoring six of the final eight points and winning 25-21. In the fifth and deciding set, Centre jumped out to a 9-4 lead, but Berry would rally to tie the score at 12-12. The Colonels scored the next two points to force a match point at 14-12. Berry fought off the first match point, but the Vikings were unable to fight off the second as a service error sealed the 15-13 win.
Beth Cecil (Bardstown, Ky.) led Centre with 15 kills, followed by Suzanne Asbury (Louisville, Ky.) with 13. Elizabeth Janszen (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded 37 of the team's 41 assists in the match. Erin McGrath (Louisville, Ky.) led four Colonels in double digit digs with 22. Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) recorded 15 digs, while Elizabeth Janszen had 12 and Celia Moser (Troy, Ohio) finished with ten.
The Colonels advanced to face the host school and top seed Hendrix Warriors in the semifinals at 3:30 CST. The winner of that semifinal will face the winner of (2) Millsaps vs. (3) Birmingham Southern in Sunday's championship match.
