Box Score The Centre women's basketball team never recovered from a first half Berea run in a 62-48 road loss Wednesday in Berea, Ky.
Freshman Kendall Lewis (Nashville, Tenn.) led the Colonels with 12 points off the bench, nine of which came in the second half as the Colonels tried to claw back from a 38-16 halftime deficit. Alexis Guy (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) chipped in 11 for Centre while Berea's Rayven Shead led all scorers with 17 points off the bench.
Centre never led in the game, with Berea scoring the first six points and pulling away from there. The first of three 3-pointers by Lewis pulled the Colonels to within six at 16-10 at the 11:00 mark, but Centre managed just two field goals the rest of the way as Berea closed the half on a 22-6 run.
Berea went on to lead by as many as 26 points when it scored the first four points of the second half. The Colonels had a bright spot when they outscored Berea 17-8 over a seven minute stretch, but Centre would get no closer than a 12-point margin at 59-47 and 60-48.
Berea held the advantage in the post throughout the contest, outrebounding Centre 49-31 and holding a 26-10 edge on points in the paint. Centre shot 32.7 percent (17-of-52) overall and 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from 3-point range, while Berea shot 35.3 percent (24-of-68) from the field and 16.7 percent (2-of-12) from outside.
The meeting was the first between Centre and the nearby NAIA program since a 95-77 Colonel victory in 2000, and the first Berea win over Centre since 1998. With the result, Centre drops to 2-3 on the year while Berea improves to 3-4. The Colonels are back in action when they host Hanover on Dec. 16.
