Box Score The Centre women's basketball team pulled away late to post an 89-77 victory over Birmingham-Southern in a Southern Athletic Association game Friday in Birmingham, Ala.
Paige Baechle (Gallatin, Tenn.) led the Colonels with a season-high 28 points and 10 rebounds. Alexis Guy (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) added 18 points off the bench while Maggie Hartlage (Louisville, Ky.) and Alanna Guy (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) each contributed 14 points. Laura van Perusem led Birmingham-Southern with 14 points.
Baechle scored the first four points of the game to help the Colonels to an early lead, which they held on to until BSC took its first lead at 30-28 after a 7-0 run late in the first half. The Panthers led by as many as seven points in the first half before Centre rallied to cut the margin to 41-37 at the break.
Baechle and Alanna Guy combined to score 12 points as Centre went on a 13-3 run to take a 52-47 lead by the 15:00 mark of the second half. Birmingham-Southern cut the lead to two points at the 10 minute mark, but never got any closer. Centre outscored the Panthers 20-4 over the next six minutes and led by double digits the rest of the way.
Centre shot 50 percent (31-of-62) for the game while holding BSC to 37 percent (21-of-57) shooting. The Colonels outrebounded the Panthers 41-34.
Centre moves to 15-7 overall with a 9-2 record in SAA play. Birmingham-Southern drops to 9-12 overall and 5-5 in the conference. The Colonels continue their road trip when they travel to Millsaps on Sunday.
