Centre falls to Transylvania 7-3 in baseball action

Box Score

Tied 3-3 after six innings of play the Centre College baseball team allowed four unanswered runs in the final three innings to fall 7-3 to Transylvania University Tuesday, March 11 in Danville, Ky.

The Colonels allowed a run in each the second and third to fall behind 2-0, but a sacrifice fly by sophomore Jake Johnson (Louisville, Ky.) in the bottom of the third cut the lead to 2-1.

The Pioneers (4-5) pushed the lead to 3-1 in the fourth and held that lead until the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Sam Spees (Dayton, Ohio) and freshman Grant Herald (Lexington, Ky.) had an RBI single each in the inning to tie the game at 3-3.

That was all Centre would score as Transylvania added a run in the seventh, eighth and two in the ninth for the final 7-3 tally.

The Colonels made things tough on themselves with nine errors and three walks in the game that led to four unearned runs.

Junior pitcher Matt Cox (Middlesboro, Ky.) suffered the loss after allowing a run in two innings of work. He falls to 0-1 on the season.

Spees finished with two hits in two at-bats, scored a pair of runs and knocked in another.

Centre, now 4-8, will host Wabash College Thursday, March 13. Game time is set for 6 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
