Women's tennis splits with Oglethorpe and Berry

The Centre women's tennis team split a pair of matches over the weekend, winning 5-1 at Oglethorpe on Saturday before falling 6-2 at Berry on Sunday.

The Colonels opened the weekend with the victory at Oglethorpe, taking two of three doubles matches and the first three singles matches that were played to completion in the weather shortened contest.

Centre got out to a 2-1 lead with Kathryn Hays (Lexington, Ky.) and Molly McElvogue (Phoenix, Ariz.) winning 8-1 and Kate Tomey (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Courtney DeLong (Louisville, Ky.) winning 8-1 in then No. 1 and No. 2 matches respectively.

Hays also picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win in the No. 1 singles match and Tomey won 6-1, 6-0 in No. 2. The other singles match that went final was No. 4 where Maddie Pitt (Louisville, Ky.) won 6-4, 6-1.

On Sunday, Centre moved on to face Berry, where the Colonels lost 6-2, picking up one win in doubles and singles.

Hays and McElvogue again won the No. 1 doubles match, this time with a 9-8 decision over Berry's Emma O'Reilly and Caitlin Smith. The other victory came from Maddie Pitt, who was a 7-6, 7-5 winner over Lauren Byrket in the No. 4 singles match.

Centre comes away from the weekend with a 3-6 record and travels to Campbellsville on Thursday.
