Box Score 2 The Centre College baseball team earned an SAA doubleheader split against No. 11 Birmingham Southern with a 2-0 win in game one, and an 8-0 loss in game two Saturday, April 12 in Birmingham, Ala.
Game one featured a pitcher's duel as the two starters combined to allow only six total hits. The Colonels broke through for the only runs of the game in the fifth inning.
Junior Trey Litsey (Louisville, Ky.) walked to start the inning. A throwing error then put runners on first and second with nobody out. Freshman Trevor Brewer (Bowling Green, Ky.) followed by sacrificing the runners to second and third. Sophomore Zach Montgomery (Louisville, Ky.) scored Litsey with a ground out, and freshman Alex Richardson (Mt. Washington, Ky.) singled just inside the third base bag to score freshman Andrew Olson (Louisville, Ky.) for a 2-0 lead.
Caudill did the rest as he limited the Panthers to only two hits to earn his first career shutout, and first career win. The sophomore allowed only one runner to reach second and nobody to reach third, while retiring 13 straight at one point. Caudill finished with two walks and five strikeouts in going the distance.
Birmingham Southern (26-9 overall, 14-3 SAA) scored an unearned run in the first inning in game two and never looked back. The Panthers added another run in the fourth and then three each in the fifth and sixth for the final 8-0 tally.
The Colonels offense mustered only three hits in the game by three different players. Freshman Jordan Short (Neon, Ky.) took the loss. He allowed five runs - four earned - over 4.2 innings of work.
Centre, now 12-18 overall and 6-9 in the SAA, will be back in action Sunday, April 13 for the rubber game of the three-game series. Start time is set for 1:10 p.m. CDT in Birmingham, Ala.
